A life measured in care
Introduction
A physician of the people
She belonged to the first batch of medical graduates of Veer Surendra Sai Medical College, Burla — now VIMSAR. She joined the Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital on the afternoon of 11 February 1966, at the age of twenty-four. In the 1960s the hospital often had no electricity. She examined patients, conducted deliveries and sat through night emergencies by the light of a hurricane lantern.
She is a polyglot. She speaks Odia, English, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali and Santali, and is fluent in many dialects of Mayurbhanj and other parts of Odisha, so patients can discuss their illness in their mother tongue.
She has treated patients of four generations. In Rairangpur she has treated thousands of families since the 1960s and knows their medical history. She believes in natural healing, prescribes very little medicine, and helps the poor with physician samples and other medical help.
